Bernard "Bernie" Belan Obituary

After a lifetime full of love and laughter, our Bernie (Bernard) Belan departed this world on February 7, 2026 at the age of 73.

Bernie was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Munhall H. S. in 1970 and Indiana State University of Pennsylvania in 1974 with a degree in Education. After working several years in management for Roy Rogers and Wendys, Bernie finally fulfilled his dream of becoming an educator. He taught at Cox High School in Virginia Beach as a member of the Social Studies Department for almost 20 years before retiring in 2017. He was named as a Distinguished Teacher for the academic years 2006-2007 and 2009-2010. In 2011, he was selected as Cox High School’s Teacher of the Year.

Bernie was predeceased by his parents, John C. Belan and Margaret A. Belan. He is survived by his wife of almost 48 years, Margie, along with his sisters, Annamarie Belan of Munhall, PA and Carol (Mike) Bair of Wrightsville, PA. He also leaves behind his extended family including his Aunt Elizabeth Belan of Jefferson Hills, PA and her family, along with several in-laws, nieces, nephews and their families.

Bernie was a lifelong Steeler, Pirate and Penguin fan. He had a passion for teaching, history, photography and world travel. As he embarks on his final travel adventure, he leaves behind an abundance of memories to share among his loving family and friends.
